Bluebell woods at Portbury

One of my favourite sights of spring - a shimmering azure haze under the trees. The camera never does it justice, you just have to go and contemplate them for yourself. The nature reserve at Portbury is also full of wild garlic at this time.

Spring is here

Here at Willow Chiropractic, we don’t need to check on what the weather is doing outside to see if spring has arrived. We recognise it when we look at the nature of appointments from our patients, the majority of which seem to relate to joint and back pain. When questioned as to what might be the cause of the problem, the usual reply was “Well I spent the weekend working in the garden and I think I must have done something then”. That usually tells us all we need to know. LiftingAs chiropractors in Bristol we are used to those who tend to ‘hibernate’ physically in the winter, and then leap into action as soon a spring arrives, without giving your body a chance to readjust. Unfortunately the older you get, the more time you need to give yourself to breaking into your spring routine, especially when that involves a lot of bending over and lifting of heavier objects than you are used to. That even includes the grass collector on the back of your lawn mower. The most important thing to remember when lifting any heavy object, is to lower yourself down to the level of the object rather than bend over the top of it, before picking it up. The same apples indoors too There are so many things we do on a daily basis that we don’t realise are causing continual damage to our backs. To stop that means breaking routines and changing what to us feels more natural. When you realise that virtually everything you have lifted you have done so incorrectly, it will feel strange to lift items in a different way. In this image from the respected mayo Clinic in the USA they go as far as to show you how to lift a laundry basket – a common occurrence, but they want to point out this is just one of so many things we do wrong. As Bristol chiropractors we are equally keen to spread the word about correct lifting and how to care for your back. So if you are suffering from those springtime aches and niggles, why not contact us at Willow Chiropractic and let us run through what you can do to make sure you minimise any chances of creating unnecessary musculoskeletal problems – the ones you just don’t seem to be able to get rid of very easily.
